This catalogue resulted from our attempts (since 1963) to accommodate and modernize the labelling of type-material of Recent fishes in the collections of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA), now named Institute of Taxonomie Zoology, University of Amsterdam. We traced 6625 type-specimens of 714 nominal species or subspecies, 228 of which are primary type-specimens (holotype, lectotype, or neotype); moreover, the collection contains one or more syntypes of 222 nominal (sub-) species. A few syntypes are presently indicated as future lectotype in the collection, awaiting publication by various specialists. Such specimens are not distinguished in this catalogue. It is possible that lectotype designations for some species have been validly published, which... |

The type species of the genus Loricariichthys Bleeker, 1862, Loricariichthys maculatus (Bloch, 1794), is redescribed from two syntypes, one of which is designated the lectotype. The same specimen is also designated the neotype for Plecostomus cataphracta Gronovius (ed. Gray), 1854 (non Loricaria cataphracta Linnaeus, 1758, sensu stricto). The type locality of both nominal species is restricted after a comparison to specimens recently collected from a locality in Surinam. |

A review of 99 species and subspecies of the genus Corydoras is given. The primary type-material is recorded together with additional type-specimens deposited in 22 different museum collections. Two neotypes and 22 lectotypes are designated. The species are arranged in five groups: 31 species in the punctatus-group, 11 in the barbatus-group, 25 in the aeneus-group, 8 in the elegans-group, and 19 in the acutusgroup. Measurements and counts of almost all primary typespecimens are tabulated. Ill-known illustrations of type-material are included. |

This publication presents a catalogue of the taxa of the neotropical family Loricariidae, the mailed catfishes, including about 600 described species and 70 genera. An attempt is made to assign each species to its proper genus and to arrange the genera into an approximate phylogenetic order. Numerous new combina tions have become necessary. A new tribe, consisting of two new subtribes, and three new genera are herein established. Notes on type-material, recorded in the literature subsequent to an original description, are added. Literature references aim to include all publications containing original descriptions and proposals of new names. |

Dentectus barbarmatus, a new genus and species of mailed catfish of the subfamily Loricariinae, tribe Loricariini, is described from tributaries of the northern margin of the Orinoco River in Venezuela. Morphometric and meristic data of several specimens are presented and illustrations are given. The relationships of the new genus with other genera of the tribe are discussed. It is assigned to the subtribe Planiloricariina, together with Pseudohemiodon Bleeker, 1862, Rhadinoloricaria Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1974, Crossoloricaria Isbrücker, 1979, and Planiloricaria Isbrücker, 1971. |

The taxonomy of the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, is reviewed and the closely related Campoma guppy, P. wingei n. sp., is described. Formerly, the common guppy was not judged to be closely related to any other species of Poecilia, but the new species is the second species to be allocated in the subgenus Acanthophacelus Eigenmann, 1907. The recognition of P. wingei results from observed character displacement, i.e., on the interaction between two closely related species in a shared environment. In addition to differences in coloration, behaviour also indicates specific differences. The area in which P. wingei occurs, the Campoma region at the base of the Paría Peninsula in Venezuela, hints to an origin of the subgenus Acanthophacelus prior... |

A large number of previously unrecorded specimens of mailed catfishes of the genus Metaloricaria Isbrücker, 1975 (Loricariinae, tribe Harttiini, subtribe Metaloricariina) is compared with the known specimens from French Guiana and Surinam. This results in the recognition of two subspecies, viz., M. paucidens paucidens Isbrücker, 1975, from the rivers Oyapock and Maroni (French Guiana, Surinam), and M. p. nijsseni (Boeseman, 1976) from the rivers Suriname, Saramacca, Nickerie and Corantijn (Surinam). These subspecies were originally described as two different species, even within two different genera: Metaloricaria paucidens Isbrücker, 1975, and Harttia nijsseni Boeseman, 1976. Morphometric and meristic data, together with illustrations are given of the two... |

Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus (Kner, 1854) is redescribed and figured after examination of 132 specimens from the Rio Amazonas, Essequibo River, and Rio Paraguai systems, including five syntypes, from which the lectotype is selected. Reganella depressa (Kner, 1854) is redescribed and figured after examination of 7 specimens from the Rio Amazonas system, including two syntypes, from which the lectotype is selected. Relationships of the monotypic genera Hemiodontichthys Bleeker, 1862, and Reganella Eigenmann, 1905 with other genera are briefly discussed. |

Hypopygus lepturus Hoedeman, 1062, was hitherto known from the holotype and one paratype only, both imported aquarium specimens. In this paper the type locality of the species is restricted. Additional distributional data from Surinam are given, together with records on the occurrence of H. lepturus in Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and on the very likely occurrence in Peru. Comparative notes on Steatogenys elegans (Steindachner, 1880) sensu Boulenger, 1898, are added because of the similar appearance of both species. The synonymy of Tateichthys duidae La Monte, 1929, with Steatogenys elegans is established. |

A redescription and figures of Corydoras nattereri Steindachner, 1877, are given together with a description and figures of a new species, Corydoras prionotos, sympatric with Corydoras nattereri, with comparable dimensions and a similar colour pattern. A total of 1066 specimens were examined, including primary type-material of Corydoras juquiaae Von Ihering, 1907, and of Corydoras nattereri triseriatus Von Ihering, 1911, which are both placed in synonymy of C. nattereri, the holotype of which is lost. A neotype for Corydoras nattereri is designated. Corydoras prionotos differs from C. nattereri mainly in having the medial border of the pectoral-fin spine strongly serrate. |
